hi everyone,
found this interesting video on youtube of a live gynandromorph papilio memnon. it's one thing to see a dead pinned specimen of this rare event, but to see one alive and feeding from flowers is something very spectacular!

Wow! That's definite PROOF the specimen wasn't glued together, like they do on eBay...

your welcome thierry i heard that papilio memnon is quite often one species that gynandromorphism occurs in than most other species, not sure why, but would make sense because i have seen quite allot of photo's appear especially on the papiliondae fb page of the many examples this species. i remember Adam cotton saying he had 2 gynandromorphs appear in his stock in just 1 year, that's quite lucky indeed! zac

Only one was Papilio memnon and it wasn't bilateral like the one in the amazing video. Mine had the lower half of the right hindwing upperside with female wing pattern, but the underside was totally normal. True bilateral gynandromorphs of Papilio memnon are very rare indeed, and I have bred many thousands of this butterfly and never seen one. The other was a less obvious mosaic gynandromorph of Papilio clytia, and is the only one I have bred in thousands of this species too. Adam.

Hi Adam,
Thanks for clearing that up. There was one impressive collection I saw that had quite a few mosiacs and a couple of bilateral specimens of p. Memnon. I agree this event of being bilateral is indeed very rare. And the most commonly seen is mosiac individuals. Stunning gynandromorphs Adam, something truly to be cherished in any collection.
