Here are the Caligo memnon butterflies I recently received that eclosed as white eyed adults. Three emerged out of a shipment of 50. Out of the thousands of Caligo I've received I've never seen anything like this. What do you guys think? Attachments:

I saw color defects in beetles eyes, so why not in butterflies? Only problem I see is that they may loose their eye color when they die and the eyes dry out unless the back skin of the eye is that shiny white.

I wonder if they are blind?

I was wondering the same thing myself. Although, it could be the same thing with eye albinism in Drosophila flies. It doesn't necessarily result in blindness - just lack of pigment in the eye.

They remind me of the old instructor in the TV series "Kung Fu". If they could talk they would probably address their caterpillars as "Grasshopper" .
The eyes of Bupestrid beetles, and Pepsis wasps, go white if they are exposed to heat (in dead specimens).

Hi tracehardin,
Just curious what you've done with these? As people have said it's likely that once dead the eyes may lose their white colouration. I just wondered if you'd dispatched these and mounted them and if so...what colour are the eyes now?

Hi Simon, I still have all the specimen preserved and they have indeed retained their white eyes.
