A while ago here in the UK, some of us were having problems with parcels getting through customs. It seemed that no one really understood the difference between "dead dried specimens" and "live specimens" after numerous phone calls and emails to DEFRA, an agreement was made that all "dead dried specimens" (no CITES) should be allowed through. Brilliant....Up untill last week that is....
A parcel came from UGANDA, but for some reason, the couriers from UGANDA did not wrap the parcel up in postal bags. All they did was wrap cling film around two clear boxes, allowing everyone to see what was inside.
OMG.......anyone would think that I had introduced anthrax into the country.
The customs were fine, But this one postal worker has taken it upon himself to inform health and safety and the head office of many postal companies about insects being transported around the UK.
The conversation went something like this.........
(I had missed my parcel so i had to collect it from the main sorting office)
"hello, do you have your parcel card with you and some I.D?"
"yes here it is" I said.
"Oh, are you the man with the beetles?"
"yes, why is there a problem?"
"there's a big problem" he replied. "I was just going to send them away to be incinerated"
"what do you mean? You can just send someone's parcel away to be incinerated"
"Oh yes I can, They are illegal"
"no they're not, how would you know what's illegal and what's not? you have been delivering my parcels for over 6 years"
"they are making my workers itch, they have come out in a rash" he said.
I started laughing at this and asked the man if he was ok.
he then said that he was going to take it upon himself to make sure that I never receive another consignment of insects ever again. I was furious...he then preceded to go and get my parcel. He came back holding the boxes with his two trigger fingers underneath the box lids at full stretch. "here he said, this is the last time our company will deliver anything like this again"
I contacted the head office and asked how I stopped their company from picking up my boxes from the main hub in the UK, his reply was, "I don't know"
just thought i'd share.
