I get fishflies at home, but as I kid I always dreamed of catching one of those nasty dobsonflies with the big pincers. But, no, never. Fishflies, with their feathery antennae, yes- use the larvae for fishing, the adults come to the lights in droves and I hate the damned things.
It wasn't till '98 in Ecuador that I finally got one of the nasty big boys.
Anyway, this year is no different. For every sphingid at the light I get 20 fishflies. Same old story.
Well, don't I walk out of the shopping market that's 300m from my place and up on the wall...something that looks "not right". It's too big. So I go over and take a look and dammit, it's a dobsonfly. Long story short, I whacked it off the wall up high by swinging my shirt at it.
So what's the deal? It's not like E. odorata which can fly thousands of miles. How can one of these things finally appear after decades of collecting in the same area?
