This C.veiovis has a very swollen abdomen. What causes some males to have this condition? At first I thought it was a female until I saw it had claspers. Chris

Chris,
Almost certainly this specimen is ex pupa. I see this problem with a small percentage of butterflies I breed just after they emerge. There is a blockage in their genitalia which prevents them from expelling the meconium after they emerge from the pupa. When I find specimens that have this problem it is often possible to unblock them by using a finger nail to clear the blockage from the end of the genitalia.
I assume that in nature these specimens either die or are able to unblock themselves after a while.
Adam.
