Good morning board. Found an insect that I have never seen before (see picture). Would appreciate any guidance on identification. Thank you in advance! Location: Central NJ, USA Time and date: Early afternoon, Oct 31st Size: Large...about an inch and a half long Other: Two were found in close proximity to each other (within 5 feet).

That is a blister beetle, family Meloidae. The genus is Meloe. There are about 6 species in the general area and it is easiest to ID using the males. I think yours is a female. Maybe someone familiar with Meloe can ID it to species from your photo, but not me. Or you can try Bugguide.net. Rick
