Speaking of Asterocampa, yesterday I saw a female A. clyton nectaring on a Zinnia flower in our garden in the southern Appalachians in Tennessee. That's the first time I've ever seen an Asterocampa on a flower. A sight like that kinda jars one - it's like seeing all those Polygonias at flowers in the Rockies. Just ain't natural!

Asterocampa are so friendly they border on being a pest. In the last week I've had one help itself to the soda I was drinking then another rode around on my hat for awhile. Another was on my back and I brought it in the house with me. He better be glad he didn't end up in a envelope

A few days ago I put out two bait traps loaded with fermented bananas and peaches. I mix in some sugar, brown or white, and run the concoction through a blender. This year is one of the best Iv'e seen for Asterocampa, and Limenitis. So far I have encountered Asterocampa celtis, and clyton both male and female. Angle wings of two species, Polygonia interrogationis, and P. comma, along with a few other species of Satyridae are also fairly regular visitors. Interestingly I have collected two forms of Asterocampa clyton, both typical and the dark form "geneumbrosa". In the photo below I have two pair of this species that illustrate the different forms. If you run into any more satyrs, could you save me a few?

Sure Tom. I tried calling you this afternoon, but you were probably busy. Will try on Saturday. Will try and be in the field about mid day looking for Hemileuca burnsi.

Is thicker bait better, or liquid bait? Fruit pieces, or none at all?
