John,
The species described is Vespa velutina, the Asian yellow-legged hornet. The UK press keep confusing it with Vespa mandarinia, which grows much bigger of course, and has never occurred in Europe (not yet anyway). Vespa velutina is actually smaller than our native UK species Vespa crabro but more destructive to bees. V. velutina is now well established in mainland Europe and occurring sporadically in the UK now.

Hi Johnny,
Thanks for the correction on the i.d. J.. I thought it a little strange that such a huge, aggressive hornet had quietly invaded Europe & England relatively unnoticed... especially when I remember seeing, I think it was on a Nat. Geo special, what absolute carnage they can inflict on tame honeybee colonies &, of course, also endanger any man or beast that accidentally stumbles onto their nests.
