What cameras would you recommend for taking insects in general? I'm thinking of buying a new camera but to be honest I don't have a lot of photography experience so I need some pointers as to what camera would be worth buying.

I'm a big fan of Canon (they have the MP-E 65mm 1x-5x lens, not available for Nikon). But really you can't go wrong with Canon, Nikon or even Sony. Pick one and plan on sticking with it for life. A full frame sensor is nice but not necessary, just really depends on the $$ you have and what you want to accomplish.
In general any old camera body will do - I'd rather have an old Canon 40D/50D or something and put a nice lens on it, like the MPE or a good 100mm.

I used to spend way too much time photographing insects. The setup I used consisted of a Canon 40D, speedlight 430EX flash and a 180mm L grade macro lens. This was mounted to a manfrotto tripod. I used a cable switch and set the mirror lockup camera function to minimize camera shake that ruins macro shots. Hope this helps.

While we are on the subject of cameras. I wish the manufacturers would stop integrating video capabilities into what is supposed to be a still camera. I didn't like tv/vcr combos either
