Hello all, I live in Wisconsin and I have searched, searched, and searched for a luna moth caterpillar. I can't find them anywhere. Obviously it's winter right now, but I would like some advice for when the season does come to find them. Please and thank you.

Look along the edges of woods or in wooded fence rows. Try to find hickory, walnut and ash trees. Those are some of the host plants

Thanks, didn't know hickory was one of the plants they laid on. Is that all they lay there eggs on though, in trees?

Finding larvae is next to impossible. You could try the sheets under the tree thing and all, but I'd suggest you get yourself a female next season via lights and get ova from her. Then u could see all the larvae u want while you reared them. I see females all the time in summer and could get ova for you. If u want this, pm me next May.

Yes. You may find cocoons, but don't count on it...

Yeh, May for here in IL. WI is probably in June. Either way, grab a girl and voila. Each summer I also head south to KY, TN, AL, and this coming summer to MS as well. If u want, I can almost surely get you some ova as I see tons of lunas each trip.

I've found adult lunas from about mid-May through early September in SW Wisconsin, although I think they are less common as you go northward.
