As far as I know, Ornithoptera alexandrae is still classified as CITES 1 and endangered. Why, then, does this ad appear today, 4 Feb, on the insect classified? Ad Number: 37193 Posting IP: 77.222.104.8 (Country: RU)

Russia has never signed CITES convention. So he can offer alexandrae without fear of punishment. But naturally the import in a country that has signed CITES is not possible and the buyer must fear prosecution.

Thanks for clearing this up. Was unaware that Russia didn't participate in signing CITES 1 agreement.

I live in a country that signed the CITES and I would have the customs not only confiscate my package but they will also put me on a trial (cf. Bic with his birdwings confiscated in LA a while ago). Fees (including attorney) and potentially jail time!

And what about eBay welcoming illegal sale offers time after time, giving no damn, without any responsibility? Is that all right?

And what about eBay welcoming illegal sale offers time after time, giving no damn, without any responsibility? Is that all right? How is Ebay going to vet sales? They'd have to be experts on CITES, Camaros, and Cameroon. Users have the ability to flag sales, it's a community driven and supposedly self-policing venue. If you don't like something, flag it to Ebay. But why? CITES is a swell idea that turned into (as always) a job generator. If USFWS, CITES, Wildlife Federation, Sierra, and all the rest really gave a damn about Alexandrae they'd be buying land, shooting poachers, farming species, and terminate logging with Iran-style embargoes. But all these organizations are nothing more than leftist noise- complain then do nothing- well, nothing but feel good rubbish that keeps them employed. Here's what CITES gives you: Chuck

What would happen if we were captive raising a non-CITES animal that then became CITES? Would I have to give it up to the government?
