Went in the butterfly house at the St Louis zoo. Within 30 seconds was in trouble with staff.

They got me for trying to get a butterfly to climb up on my finger. At least I didn't pinch it and put it in a envelope which is my natural response.

Here is my story from the Denver Butterfly Pavilion. My family went several years ago, we visited the room with all the butterflies flying around and then went into the kids area and let them jump around and play for while and then spent the obligatory 15 minutes in the gift shop with the kids asking to buy everything. Then we took a few pictures with some of the outside statues and got in our car to leave. As we were pulling out of the parking lot I looked over at my wife and noticed she had a Papilio in her hair with a cryptic underside and it must have been there for about an hour without moving and no one noticing.
We carefully walked back inside and showed the staff and shook it off in the room, but if we had gotten onto the freeway I wouldn't have bothered going back.

I am a collector and I have been in numerous butterfly houses/exhibits. I only collect and study North American Lepidoptera. There are a few exceptions, Sphingids, Seaside and Marpesia. I decided in the early 1970 to collect only North American Lepidoptera. I enjoy visiting Butterfly Houses/displays and seeing Birdwings and Morpho's flying together. You will never see that happen in nature!

When they guy in the butterfly house told me I could not touch them he immediately said if they land on my then that was ok. I told him that was discrimination......

A species of heliconian. It would have been better if I would have got verbally reprimanded for trying to touch a morpho at least.

When my daughter was about 18 months I took her to the butterfly zoo. Within minutes a pretty nymphalid landed on her stroller, she grabbed it (smashing it, with pieces sticking through her little fingers) and everyone was screaming "she killed a butterfly!!!" I could not pry it from her fingers.
I like butterfly zoos in winter because they are HOT. I can go in, sit down, and enjoy the heat and humidity.

I wish there is beetle house out there somewhere. It's not fair to the insects only showing butterflies to the publics.

I totally agree, but butterfly houses are opened mainly for profit and the public loves butterflies and hates other bugs including beetles. Same to collect insects. If one is catching butterflies that is in public opinion very wrong and unacceptable but if other "ugly" bugs are killed it is no problem at all. |

Paul, I find that kind of attitude as annoying when it comes to dealing with the public regarding insects and collecting. Butterflies are awesome, but can be over rated compared to some nice moths and beetles. People have this weird love of butterflies. Theyare just diurnal, colorful moths really. Lol

I like them all. Butterflies, moths, beetles and dragonflies. All great in my book. When people give me ### for collecting leps I ask them what's the difference between a roach and a butterfly? And when they stare at me with the blank look I say nothing both are insects. That usually does the trick....
