I have started construction on my collection building. It will be 24 feet by 20 feet. A certain woman has given me notice of eviction from the spare bedroom. The increasing numbers of insects, snakes and fish are the no doubt the cause. She says everything must go except for the 90 gallon marine aquarium in the living room. When completed it will house 10 or 12 snakes and a few amphibians, five 75 gallon aquariums, insect specimens, mineral collection, Indian artifact collection, couch, mini-fridge and flat screen TV. She will be allowed in by appointment only. I will post photos of the building progress. Since I'm building most of this myself it should be interesting. Disclaimer: I am NOT a carpenter.

My favorites! Commercial diver for years in Florida collecting. Any group of minerals you favor?

That would be a tough one to nail down. Anything in the quartz family. Although they contain a variety of minerals I'm fond of Keokuk geodes. I made a trip to Hamilton, IL and collected some a few years back. I like arrowheads made of kaolin chert. When it was heat treated it turns amazing colors like orange and yellow. The miners sell the pyrite dollars they find in the coal mines around Sparta, IL not far from where I live.

You keep aquariums and insect specimens in the same room? No problem with dermestids?

Wow! That sounds so cool, and mini fridge stocked with cold beer, I wish I could pay you a visit when it's done. I would be still a little worry about humid level due to fish tanks, as Chuck mentioned before. I hope you could solve that problem with dehumidifier . All the best with your project.

I have had no infestations ever. I build my own drawers so they are tight and loaded with crushed moth balls in small plastic containers. I will be running a heat/ air unit like the ones in a hotel. The aquariums are covered so they don't really create a problem with humidity. Here in southern Illinois the humidity is so bad in the summer you almost need gills. Paulk: you would be most welcome to visit but, unfortunately there won't be any beer in the fridge. I found out late last year I'm mildly diabetic so I can't have beer or regular soda anymore. I have also in the past two weeks been diagnosed with a genetic condition that I inherited from my parents called hemochromatosis. It had damaged my liver and pancreas causing me to become diabetic. Now in addition to sugar I can't eat meat. It's not easy being me.

Hey guys I have been making some progress on my building. The inside of the block has been water sealed and the outside has been painted the same color as the foundation of my house. I have installed the sill plate and constructed the main support beam. I poured concrete pads for the piers today as well. I will be building floor joists tomorrow. More to come......

The construction continues. I have all the floor joists installed and set. Also did some dirt work filling in the footings. Next I will install the sub floor decking.

You're making real progress! I'm curious - what sort of HVAC system to you plan to install? Any plumbing, a half-bath, say? jh
