Gratian,
If you collect outside of protected areas (National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries) and do not catch any protected species there is no problem in Thailand, and there are no restrictions about taking specimens home with you.
List of Protected Thai Insects: 1. Cheirotonus parryi Gray 2. Prosopocoilus (Cladognathus) giraffa Oliver 3. Mouhotia batesi Lewis 4. Mormolyce phyllodes Hagenbach 5. Teinopalpus imperialis Hope 6. Troides amphrysus Cramer 7. Troides helena Linnaeus 8. Stichophthalma godfreyi Rothschild 9. Stichophthalma cambodia Hewitson 10. Stichophthalma louisa Wood-Mason 11. Stichophthalma camadeva Westwood 12. Bhutanitis lidderdalii Atkinson 13. Papilio protenor Cramer 14. Meandrusa sciron Leech 15. Meandrusa payeni Boisduval 16. Papilio palinurus Fabricius 17. Actias rhodopneuma Rober 18. Actias maenas Doubleday 19. Actias selene Huebner 20. Actias sinensis Mell
Adam.

I must add that many National Parks borders are very poorly marked so in many cases you will not know for sure if you are in or out of protected areas. Many villages and coffee, Tea plantations are also included within National Parks borders now, so caution should be taken at all times.

PS. Adam, is there any current map of National Parks available? I searched all internet and couldn't find anything specific on this subject.

Thank you very much for the information.I'll be careful because I had some bad experience a few years ago in Turkey.I was arrested and get 30.000 euro fine(which I did not pay,off course). We have a guide and hope he knows the location of protected area.

Yea, I found those maps before but the boundaries are not really accurate nor detailed.
The truth is if there is a nice, primary piece of forest 80% of chance it is National Park or other protected area and it’s not only in Thailand.

Geez Adam, by the looks of that protected list all the best things are protected!! Not much left but, the common fodder... Bummer. Might as well go to Laos or Cambodia where they probably don't give a hoot!

No, the list is very small, over 1200 species of butterflies and who knows how many moths and beetles. The list includes actually mainly common species. The good stuff is free to go ( off course if you could find them out of NP).

Hi Gratian, Adam and all,
from my experience Adam is right, stay away from national parks and youre ok, yes some locations and areas can be on the doorstep, just use common sense! for the list of protected species Adam has given it looks right but i know the DNP have recently changed alot and have put some non protected species onto quota lists! yes common stuff, but thats what happens when bods in offices want to climb the ladder and never get outside or consult with the people in the field
as for places to stay here in Thailand and especially the Amazing North Thailand, we have our own homestays now on our very small butterfly farm next door to Wiang kosai national park!
hope it helps
cheers Rob

Are you near Punjen Hideaway? Or did you purchase it? I think Dwaila mentioned something about possiblity of selling the resort if I’m not mistaken

I was in Punjen in June 2018. Dwaila was about to sell her resort and started building something nearby (near the Tilapias breeding pond for those who know the place).
I saw the new building under construction and I understood that it would be reserved for entomologists, perhaps with different comfort conditions.
You can easily contact Dwaila on the Punjen Hide-Away website.
