Kent, Ohio. USA. Insect nest measuring 12” or so. Found underneath a dead tree on our property. White outside. Soft, dirt-like inside. No sign of insects anymore. I was concerned it could be a termite nest, but a local exterminator does not believe it to be. I’m still curious, so turning here. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks *sorry it came through without an image at first. now attached. I added the pink flag so I could find it again

I may be completely wrong but is it a puffball mushroom that has started falling apart?

Oh wow! I am searching "puffball mushrooms" and it seems they can become brown and discolored on the inside. I think you're right! Thank you so much. The descriptions on this website line up with what I am seeing on our property. www.mushroom-appreciation.com/puffball-mushrooms.html

Sifting the material under Calvatia sp. mushrooms can produce good catches of various fungi associated beetles...we all enjoy rooting around under fungus don't we?

That goes back to my High School Days. That phrase went along with SBD during English. Our English teacher, Ms Violet, would become discussed when someone dropped an SBD.
However, we had some one who could drop a Bomb and have students gasping air. I still to this day believe it was one of the girls. It would take your breath away..... Litterly.
