Hi There,
I am new to the forum and I am here to look up information on Lamprima. I am a researcher at the University of Melbourne, and I am interested in the different colour types of Lamprima beetles. I was wondering if anyone has any advice for how to find the beetles in the wild (maybe the even the larvae which I could bring back to the lab to rear)? Also, have anyone ever reared Lamprima? If so, did you notice whether different rearing conditions affected adult colour (e.g. hotter or wetter conditions resulting in a particular colour)? I am just getting started here, so any advice is appreciated!
Thank you so much for you time.
Cheers,
Amanda

Hi there,
Lamprima are very commonly bred. Though it’s mostly lamprima adolphinae. Aurata would be the species that occurs in Australia. Color to my knowledge and experience is based on genetics, and there are many color lines available, in adolphinae though. Aurata there are green and reddish, haven’t seen blue yet. Also in phalacrognathus muelleri there are now stable color strains available.
Hope this helps. Cheers Ben

Hi All, I'm so sorry for my slow response, I mustn't have my settings turned on right because I didn't realise anyone had responded. I am looking for any Lamprima and I was planning to find some in the wild and then bringing back to the lab. Does anyone have any tips for finding them? I am based in Victoria and I have been told that if I break open rotting logs I should be able to find some pupa/larvae. Jolan do you have suggestions for the conditions to keep them in? I am assuming I will need rotting wood in with them. What do you feed them? I'm looking forward to trying to find some! Thanks so much, Amanda

I am assuming I will need rotting wood in with them. What do you feed them? I'm looking forward to trying to find some! Thanks so much, Amanda Hi Amanda You can find all stages of Lamprima in weeping willow, casuarina, allocasuarina, eucalyptus, acacia and salix logs. The log MUST have white rot fungi in it. If you go looking around October you can find new adults still in their pupal chambers. One year before my Lamprima are adults I go into the bush in front of my house and I cut down some fresh casuarina logs. I then buy white oyster mushroom spawn from here www.aussimushroomsupplies.com/ and I innoculate the logs with it. I keep the logs moist and at relatively high temperatures and the mushroom develops through the log creating white rotten wood. once my Lamprima are adult and the wood is sufficiently rotten I remove the mushroom fruits and bake the logs in my oven. After that I cut of the bark and the exterior layer of the log and I blend it in a blender to make my substrate. This substrate step is extremely important. it will greatly improve your breeding results even without a large tub. I sterilize it This is because the eggs can be laid everywhere in the container other than just the logs and thus there will be less competiton for space (more, larger specimens). This is the breeding container I use Petbarn. 4 and a half moths after the adults were placed in the bredding container I sort through the substrate and place EACH LARVAE INTO A SEPERATE CONTAINER OF SUBSTRATE AND WOOD. This prevents them from competing for space and resluts in more, healthier and larger adults. About 5 months later the larvae will have completed their pupae stage ant the process begins again. as adult i feed them beetle jelly from www.geckodan.com/product/beetle-jelly-cups-16g-10-pack/ as it improves thier lifespan and eggs production in females. You could also feed them fresh fruit but you need to replace it before it rots as mites may kill your adults and larvae. I keep the larvae slightly colder than the adults. i keep them all generally above 21 degrees celsius. they would survive fine at a lower temp but they would take way longer to develop and mature. I really don't think that the color of the adult is affected by the rearing conditions. in Japan the sucessfully breed Lamprima adolphinae to predictively get the same colored adults depending on the parent insects' colors. Could you please follow and direct/private message me on Instagram at aussie_stags as I will respond day to day and it far easier for me to use and to respond from/to. Jolan L
