Hi All, I live in the Dominican Republic. I left a glass of water on my counter over night (perhaps two nights). This morning upon examination, I found a bunch of floating black specs in the water. My first thought was fleas - but upon closer examination they don't seem to have any legs. The things themselves are black, shiny, and seem to congregate in the water (though I don't see them actually moving on their own volition all that much). Any idea what these could be? Some kind of larvae perhaps? Thank you!   |

Could be mosquito egg masses, rather than larvae.

Greetings,
This may be way off base, but my first impression was that they look like Collembola. They seem to have a narrowed "head" and short stumpy legs. I have no idea why Collembola would be in such a situation, it's just the image I conjured when I first saw the picture. A better image with a more closeup view would be helpful to get a good ID.
