I have one of Leroy's bait traps out at a location that worked well for me last year. It was always empty when I checked it. Not even flies! Today I sat and observed it for a while. A butterfly entered and within seconds a sparrow flew in, grabbed it, and was back out again. Solved that mystery. Any suggestions on how to stop the marauder?

What type do you have, flat bottom or slotted pan?

It's a duralife flat bottom.
I've thought about going the pellet gun route, but it's in an urban neighborhood and the bird is a female and so many small brown female birds look similar. I am not sure if it is an English sparrow (shootable) or a chipping sparrow, indigo bunting etc (not shootable). So I don't think that'll work.

Try this to prevent birds from entering the trap. The are four (4) "eye" bolts on the platform. Loosen the nuts and turn the stop to the end of the thread. Then tighten the lock nut. This will close the gap. You may want to do the same thing to the bottom ring on the cylinder.
Question: Are you using a cake pan for the bait?
I designed a limited access ring to prevent rodents (Mice) from entering the trap. If I can find the drawing, I will let you know.
You might try a BEE BEE Gun or pellet rifle? When my older son was younger, he was a crack shot with a pellet gun.

I will try shortening the bolts. I am using a black plastic drip pan that they put under plants. It is the same diameter. I found the aluminum cake pans got eaten away in the bottom far too quickly and started rotting the wood. Do you suppose reflective bird scare tape might work, or would that also scare the butterflies?

What about a fake owl or hawk? Would that scare the butterflies?

I had a neighbor in Florida who was a plug ugly. And yes, she scared my cats, the birds and even Milo Tenaris Tulaqua V. Now that's ugly.

I finally set a Bait Trap in the Black Locusts tree in my back yard. Beginning late yesterday afternoon, I began a struggle with two of my neighbors cats, a squirrel, and a couple of mice. The mice were coming down the rope from the tree. Vasoline and Tabasco mixed together and coated the Rope suspending the bait trap from the tree. Greedy little bastards. A Mexican hot foot. Got all three with a shovel.
I have a BEEBEE gun. Not a bad shot, I make them jump when I walk out my back door.
I must be careful with the BEEBEE Gun.I live in a small house on a small lot. Taint in Kentucky no more!!!
