I am novice in stag beetles. I understand that japanese succeed in breeding quite any stag beetles. Do you know how they do (does exist a book or papers on the subjects ?) I wish to try with African Stag beetles (Prosopocoilus sp) !

Thierry, It's so much earier in Japan, you can just buy anything you want with out making up your own materials and you know your larvae will get the best. Here are the links: www1.kamakuranet.ne.jp/kabu/beet/x-manual-siiku2.htmwww.asahi-net.or.jp/~wp5k-tnd/siiku.htmDifferent family requirs different materials, ie Dorcus (fungus bottles) Allotopus and Mesotopus (different kind of fungus bottles) Prosopocoilus and Lucanus (substrate). It's very complicated if you have to mix them up yourself and I can guarantee the adults won't be big. Japanese has spent more than the pass 20 years developing them. Hope this is helpfull for you. It is possible to breed big beetles, when you're not living in Japan. You can produce good substrates by yourself such as Flake Soil. Have you ever seen a 80mm Odontolabis ludekingi from the wild? A friend of mine bred one with this size, I have it in my collection. Of course the japanese are the best breeders in the world, but it really is possible to get big beetles with selfmade substrate

Bugman
What about sp like Dorcus, Allotopus and Mesotopus that needs fungus bottles? Have any one made up their own yet? I know they are really hard to produce.

Kinshi (Fungus Bottles) is hard to produce. But 2 or 3 people here in Germany can do it, and the results are really good. But the japanese Kinshi is still better. It's true that you can't breed big Dorcus without Kinshi, Allotopus and Mesotopus won't lay any eggs if they don't have Kinshi.

The most Kinshi that we have in Germany is imported from Japan, the few people who produce it don't sell it yet, because there are still some problems.

The biggest problem is get the fungus bottles through custom into your country.

Hi.. I loving all this recent lucanid activity on the board.. its great.. please keep posting. I currently attempting to breed Phalacrognathus Muelleri after raising from L1 on botttles of Kinshi. I first bought an initial supply of kinshi from www.coleoptera-xxl.deand then made my own.. its not that difficult once you understand just how clean everything must be. The bible as far as rearing stags is concerned is called "For the love of rhinoceros and stag beetles" 2nd edition.. its a bit pricey but has covers everything including the making of kinshi and raising all the major groups of lucanids. I really recommend it. www.naturalworlds.org/scarabaeidae/moretopics/Scarabaeidae_suggested_reading.htmRegards Clive PS.. Clark.. I don't know what happened to my old account, but I couldn't log in so had to register... ?
