I haven't been much into moth baiting other than what a standard butterfly bait trap collects which can be fairly impressive when checking at dawn. Anyway, due to prohibitive cost, I have avoided the moth light traps, but I am coming across DIYers using self ballasted mercury vapor lamps and a sheet. It looks like it might be the way to go for just testing the area to see even if any moths are present. I have three questions:
1) What self ballasting MV lamp would be recommended? Of course, that is key. I'm finding clear ones next to impossible to find online. I am US based. Seems like 150W or more is the way to go.
2) What cheap lamp holder is recommended? Again, keeping costs minimal. I would think something from the hardware store might work(?).
3) Do you have to wear UV goggles with these and what is recommended?
Like I say, just testing the waters. Would use a lamp with sheet just to see if worth pursuing further.
Thanks in advance.

Well, I found 175 w clear MV "security light" locally from Craigslist. The light inside is clear and the ballast comes from the unit and is not in the bulb. Now will get the chance to see what insects are present at night. Is there any special sheet or just plain white bed sheet? How about the goggles, the yellow safety goggles with UV rating?

Anyone? The light is nearly set up, just trying to decide on a pair of googles. Looking at yellow UV ones at Walmart for about $8. Not sure what I would get this time of year, probably not a whole lot with cooler weather.
