I know the question might sound silly or be obvious, but since I am so used to the daytime butterflies and narrow bodies, for which I just pinch to stun and then remove from the trap, I'm not sure how to extract Catocala and other larger bodied moths.
For the first time in three years, I left the slits open last night and, boy, was I greeted with a lot of surprises this AM. There were three Catocala along with numerous other smaller moths. I'm not up on their scientific names at all, so will have to research. Anyway, for the three this morning, I manipulated my mason jars, one at a time, into the trap and carefully placed the jars over each candidate moth while it was on the side of the net. I then carefully and quickly placed the jar's pop up over the top and then screwed on the rest once out of the trap. Once back in the house, the jars went into the freezer. Probably not the ideal way, but not sure I could just pinch these like with the butterflies, so would welcome any suggestions.

You can not pinch moths. Saturniidae and Sphingidae can be hold by thorax and injected with ammonia but forget about Catocala, most Erebidae and Noctuidae will fly away before you can grab them. Killing jar is the only method for most moths.
