About 10 to 15 years ago, an 86mm D. granti was advertised for sale ($40) in the classifieds of this website. It sold almost immediately, but the ad was there long enough to catch my attention. It's the biggest I've ever heard of. Does anybody know who posted the ad or who bought the beetle? Has anybody seen other D. granti specimens over 80mm advertised recently?

I collected an 80mm male this summer. It's by far the largest wild specimen I have ever seen.

Navajo Co., AZ. There were 150-200 D. granti on the sheet that night, which is interesting because I was collecting moths not beetles. It was the most I've ever seen in one night. Typically it's 25-50.

What month? Had it recently rained? What time of night did they start coming in? What time did they quit?

August 31. I believe it had rained that afternoon. They start flying around 8:15 and go to about 10:30. About half male and half female. I didn’t collect any females to minimize the impact to the population. I already gave the 80mm specimen away to another collector as well as a lot of the others.
They are remarkably strong. I was careless handling them with about 4 major males in my hands at once and got my small finger pinched in between the cephalic and thoractic horns. It hurt.

Sorry this is a few months late, but I'm wondering, where specifically in Navajo Co. did you find that insane amount of Grantii?

I have seen an actual specimen much less a photograph of a Dynastes granti.
Is this beast found in the USA?

Yes, they live across the national forests of north-central Arizona to the sky islands and down into northern Sinaloa, Mexico, although they are most common in Northern Arizona. You can also find them across the National Forests in New Mexico, but they are much less common, and you can find them near the Zion National Park in Utah, as well. They are protected in Utah, though.
