People in different countries have a different sense of time and priorities, I've experienced it. I'm obsessive, and find even people in the USA to be slow, poor communicators and reticent to ship at times.
There may or may not be 3rd world countries, but I wouldn't base that designation on being ripped off by someone, I've been ripped off by all manners of persons, in person, as well as through the mail, and there is no exact profile of a scammer, except that they're after your money, scammers come from everywhere, and it is true some tend to come from particular areas, it's probably economics driving their criminality, and that drives criminals everywhere.
I avoid doing business with Central and South America, I'm probably missing out on some bugs, but what I'm not missing, is piece of mind and any money I might be worried about. Shipping issues alone drive my decision, not an assumption of dishonesty.

Depends on what you are looking to buy.

Depends on what you are looking to buy. I see I replied to this topic before, the USA considers China a "developing " country. A bit subjective perhaps. There are two kind of criminals- ones that just take your money, and ones that deliver the illegal goods.

I meant what kind of insects are they looking for. I have good contacts in most parts of the world but I don't let it be common knowledge.

I meant what kind of insects are they looking for I surmised that, but it's applicable to anything. When I'm ready for more deadstock, I'll ask here first for recommendations.

I mentioned him in this thread previously - Juan Josè Ramìrez Hernandez <macrodontia@hotmail.com>. As I said then - he has met my requirements for some very odd orders of butterflies over the last 10+ years. Juanjo is often slow, but he has never failed me when it comes to bugs from specific locations or habitats. His primary base of operations is Iquitos, but I've had him all over the country. Good data (month, year, and exact coordinates - although he jumps between coordinate systems and you have to translate them to lat long regularly).
If I had to guess, I've done perhaps eight deals with him over the last decade - totaling a few thousand bugs. Juanjo is at his best when providing mixed samples of dead bugs from Peru. He is not so much a "species by species" kind of guy - but for big-pretty species, he can probably do that (I've never ordered like that from him). His mixed samples are great - typically less than 6 bugs per species in a lot of a few hundred to a thousand bugs. (you negotiate this with him up front). I have at least 10 undescribed bugs that he has sent me over the years - waiting for me to get my but in gear. My next order will be for Hesperiidae from higher altitudes (1,500m+) in the Andes - and he will have to specifically travel to get the bugs for me (If anyone wants to join this order - pm me - my skippers are not enough to make these profitable for him by themselves and I'm sure he wants to sell as much as possible). He typically asks for 50% up front - the remainder after delivery. You get real paperwork from Peru with his orders as well.
But like I've always said, don't risk money you can't afford to loose on deals like this. Juanjo has never failed me - but he has made me sweat now and then...
