I filmed this butterfly in a butterfly garden a few weeks ago and I am wondering if anyone can tell me what it is doing with its abdomen. Was this an unsuccessful attempt to lay an egg? Or to defecate? It doesn't appear that anything was left behind on the leaf.
I do apologize for the intro and outro in the video. It's such a short clip, that I may not even make this video listed to the public. In the meantime, I am curious as to what the butterfly was doing.
Thanks in advance for any help!

It does appear to be attempting to lay an egg. I can confirm it is a female Hypolimnas bolina. Butterflies often need several attempts before they can eject an egg.

I really appreciate the information. By any chance are you knowledgeable on various types of mormon butterflies? I have a number of clips of specimens with subtle differences... I'm trying to sort those all out!

If by 'mormon butterflies' you mean Papilio then yes, that's my speciality If you post the clips I will try to help identify them. Adam.

These seem to be Papilio memnon. The problem is that I guess at least some of these or maybe all must be 'hybrids' from the Philippines, where they mix ssp. lowii from Palawan with other memnon they breed there. Note the male on the Hibiscus flower near the end has tails like lowii.
The nice tailed female in the middle of the video looks similar to ssp. agenor form distantianus but it could well be a 'hybrid'.
