So, i was out in the garden this morning (I live in the UK if that helps) and i noticed this strange, but interesting looking fly. It's body looks like it belongs to a hover fly, but the head looks like a common house fly. Here's a picture: If anyone knows what it is please tell me, thanks

That is a superb photo. I am sure that there will be someone here who can tell you what it is, or at least a close relative. I know very little about Diptera, especially in the UK, but it looks as though it could belong to family Tachinidae judging purely on the thick spines on the lower abdomen (I may be wrong so let's see what other replies come in). Tachinids are parasitic on other insects, including Lepidoptera. Adam.
