Near Canberra Australia. On olive tree, branches only. Probably wintering from last year I don't know how long they have been there. All infested branches are dead or in bad condition. The bugs are 1 - 2 mm. They don't quite look like black olive scale as far as I know. I cant see any other stages if it is a metamorphic phase. I don't see any mature bugs or predators (its been a cool spring here). There is no sooty mould or ant activity at all. You might notice what looks like powdery mildew on some leaves but I don't know that its related.

I got a microscope and it looks more like some kind of fungus fruiting body. Thanks anyway for those that looked.

Could be black olive scale Saissetia oleae, or some other Coccoidea?
