Here we have an abnormally and yet richly colored (male) of the California Dog-face butterfly. Most, though beautiful are seldom so endowed with such excessive purple overlay -- Mendocino Calif./1976 A simply unique example of the species !

Wow, the purple colour in your specimen must be very unique. Were you so lucky to collected in one of your trips down south?

Hi Paul, I have collected the Southern Dog-face (Zerene cesonia) in southern Illinois; albeit only 5 times.
However, this species is the California endemic. I acquired this one from a western collection being parted out.
This one was collected in Mendocino Calif./1976

Zerene cesonia is very rare migrant to southern Ontario and so far I haven’t seen one nor collect.
