Here is one of two *nice (male) specimens which I have representing Cuba's best known butterfly. It is endemic there, costly to own when they are in this quality, and remain a coveted yet stunning addition to any private collection.

Very nice specimen. Looks similar to the female Phoebis philea, which occurs along the Gulf coast of the USA.

Wonderful species, never thought as a youngster that I would be able to afford one but I've managed to pick up half a dozen on my travels, mainly at insect fairs here in England and at reasonable cost too.

Just to add I've found that this is one of the few species that actually gets better with age.

O'h I knew that you (yorky) would likely have several as you certainly have an eye for notable species and rarities !!
It also helps enormously to have fairs there as you do. They don't exist here...
Anyway, who can have a talk/post about "Show Your Favorite Specimen" without mentioning this "honey" amongst the worlds great ones.

The beauty about insect fairs as opposed to Internet buying, if you are lucky enough to be able to attend them, is that rarities are much more affordable and you can see exactly what you are buying. I tend to put a little away each month so that come fair time I can pretty much buy what I want. Added to that is the fact that there are not so many serious collectors in the UK now so not much competition for the best stuff. I once chanced on a box full of cethosia nietneri, males and females for £30,200 people must have seen them before me and either didn't know what they were or weren't interested and I could name countless instances when this has happened, Kallima jacksoni, cirrochroa imperatrix, cethosia lechenaulti, hypolimnas dimona, Aeropetes tulbaghia. I've been in the right place at the right time quite a lot.

I have never owned a specimen of Phoebis avelleneda, nor have I ever collected one. I saw several pairs that a friend of mine from Canada had "acquired". He had both males and females.
I was offered several pairs by a character from Indiana. I know that they are illegal to remove from Cuba.
Are they illegal to own in the USA?
I have collected hundreds of times in the Florida Keys. Never collected or saw Phoebis avelleneda.

More than once I tried to acquire ova or even live female's. I was offered papered specimens by two scam artist. I was offered ova by two different individuals. I believe it was a scam, both times.
There was a character in Indiana who supposedly could get them.
