I really must say that there are some rather creative and/or talented individuals out there in the insect market "packaging" up things for enthusiasts like you and me in the hobby. Recently, my dealer bought 6 species of different "flying" beetles all packaged up and literally "ready to go" on a pin. He purchased 6 specimens of each species so plenty of choices... Funny thing is that (most) were equally done as well in terms of their preparation, presentation/packaging. Things have sure come a long way since the days of beetles being packaged with their legs, antennae, etc. "bunched-up" at the sides and wrapped in cellophane clear wrap ! O'h forgot to mention they also have pretty good data to go with them.

They certainly seem to have gone the extra mile, but how the hell do you get them out without damaging them?

With somewhat "surgical" precision; but it can be done !
When I was a kid I used to enjoy the board game "Operation". One had to pick up tiny playing pieces with plastic forceps which were "wedgied" in tight confines. Touching the sides of the confining space made a buzzer go off. A deft/steady hand was needed...
Anyway, a sharp razor blade and a nice sharp set of small scissors will free your captive "flying beetle" in about 4 or so minutes !
