I’m being sent this moth from a butterfly bait trap. I’ve never seen a reddish white witch moth. Is this one?

Looks like Thysania agrippina. Where was it collected? How big is the wingspan? The red is unusual.

Green Hills Butterfly Ranch in Belize. Came to a bait trap over night last week. Also in the bait trap were Ascalapha odorata. This Thysania appears to be the size of a sheet of notebook paper. I cannot find any reference to one with this ruddy tint. I'm getting more exited to go to Belize in June! Robin Greaves (the ranch owner) said that his property has yet to be surveyed.....

I remember seeing one like this in Florida but never bothered to identify it. This one is also from Belize and looks about half the size of a letter envelope.

It sure appears like that to me. I'm not well versed in this group. Thanks!

Here is a beautiful Thysania zenobia I pinned last week. Collected back in 1966!

I've been lucky enough to collect 3 T. zenobia over the years (2 females, 1 male). All were resting on concrete parking lots. They blended in very well & were hard to spot. They looked like bumps in the concrete. I often wonder how many times I walked past one and didn't notice it. I just purchased a bait trap and hope it attracts more of these rarities.

58chevy, out of curiosity just how do you tell the males and females apart in the species? Is there some obvious distinction in wing pattern or size? Are the bodies of the females larger? Could we see a picture of your specimens? If you send them to me I can post them promptly.

Trehopr, the males have darker bands on the wings. The females are more monochromatic. Mothman27's specimen is a male. I'll email you a picture of both sexes side-by-side. You can post it if you'd like.
