Thanks for posting these to the board. Some of these are really cool, particularly the three that are included here. This style of macrophotography is a ton of work and takes hundreds of individual photos to get a final image. I'm really impressed with the level of detail and lighting choices. I don't know about anyone else, but I am a little confused by the positioning of some of the specimens though. I understand having them fully spread to show the full specimens, or having them posed in life-like ways like the ants above. I can also appreciate a more minimized approach (like something from Christopher Marley) where all the legs and antennae are folded in neatly to make the artistic focus the colors and textures of the specimens. It just seems like some of the specimens here are death-contorted with no particular theme to the layout (like specimens I just pulled out of the freezer). I know that it's art and everyone's aesthetics are a little different, but I'd be interested in hearing the artist's thought process.
In general though, these are a neat idea. I always love to see insect related art/photography.

FYI this advertisement post is for a company taking images from Flickr (perfectly legally since these are fully public domain images) and printing them. So when it comes to asking why they picked or how they posed these specimens—they didn't—these are research images from the USGS bee inventory lab flic.kr/p/TXN5X8 Sam Droege and his team happen to do amazing work. |

It was clearly an advertisement, I saw that the minute I read the post and saw the link. Perhaps this is something we'll see more attempts at in the forum. I'd have made a comment, but it wouldn't have been a positive one. Frankly, the post/link was offensive, at least in my opinion. We all like insect photography, but not with an ad. |

At the risk of squishing a dead bug, Adam, you and Olivier do a great job, I suppose this thread, when seen was a WTH moment, and I'll rephrase my comment. It was an affront to my feeling for the hobby, there are so many learned persons here with a lot of relevant contributions, a thinly veiled ad reckons back to when tiger cubs were being listed in the classifieds. |
