Please identify this bug. I saw this bug on a pine tree in outskirts of Atlanta,GA today. Appears to have 6 abdomen segments and at least 10 overall segments. Has either 6 or 8 legs. It is about 2" long and 1/2" wide.

The larva of a lampyrid (or possibly lycid) beetle.

Thanks for the ID! Googling name it looks like same insect. Surprising it is the larva of a Fire fly which is ten times less massive than the larva. I guess that is true with butterflies too. This thing looks like something out of Jurassic park!

The common name is trilobite beetle.

I should also mention that the females of some Lampyridae and Lycidae remain in a "larviform" state throughout life (that is, despite becoming sexually mature, they never progress into the typical, beetle-like form of the males). For example, females of SE Asian trilobite beetles such as Platerodrilus - and Duliticola -
