This is one of my favourite species from Central America, Costa Rica The green indeed is stunning but the blue colour is something very unique. This is one of the species that produces blue pigment so the colour is not effect of refracting light which pass thru the scales as this is the case in 99.9% of other species. Nessaea aglaura ssp.aglaura

Beautiful
I have 3 species and N.aglaura has deeper blue than the other ones
I didn't know blue pigment was rare. What other butterflies have them?

Quick update, the pigment is called pterobilin. It is also synthesized in a few other species but does not accumulate as much as in Nessea. The other species are Graphium sarpedon (bluebottles); Graphium agamemnon, Graphium antiphates, and Graphium doson. There is other blue pigments like sarpedobilin and phorcabilin but they are not as blue as pterobilin.

Is the green also a pigment? Yes, but different type. The coloration of wings is more complex subject than it looks.

Fantastic species Paul, thanks for sharing.
I have seen it in a couple books but, of coarse the pictures never did it any justice. Yours is far better...
What a lovely specimen. Were you unable to find any others during your stay?

Fantastic species Paul, thanks for sharing. I have seen it in a couple books but, of coarse the pictures never did it any justice. Yours is far better... What a lovely specimen. Were you unable to find any others during your stay? Only one specimen of N.aglaura. I collected only about 100 specimens in total as my stay was only a week and that was my first collecting trip to tropics with no experience in that field.
