Before I knew anything about wildlife imports I had no problems. When I later learned, got my USFWS license and did everything by the book, that’s when the problems started! I no longer have a license and import nothing.

Without proper paper work you may loose all your specimen at the customs, I almost did only by transferring planes on airport in Miami.

Hmm I'm thinking about mailing specimens back, has anyone had luck with that?

without permits, you're smuggling. I went with a group in the 80's and we brought back specimens without an issue, it was through Miami, and it was 40 years ago. I've brought back food, liquor and Cuban cigars from Italy without an issue, I think it depends on where you're coming from, Leave your "I collect butterflies" t-shirt at home, and your other red flags, if any. Mailing things back to yourself sounds like a good option..

Hmm I'm thinking about mailing specimens back, has anyone had luck with that? Mailing from where? In some countries, they will actually inspect the package when you mail it to verify contents, and they may well inform you that dead insects can not be exported without proper paperwork... john

Well I have some in laws in El Salvador who tell me that collecting there is legal, but are unsure about exporting. I have no means of figuring out how to do the paperwork because there doesn't seem to be any. I guess I will roll the dice and try to mail and if that doesn't work I'll try to bring them with me and if that doesn't work leave them with my in-laws until I can figure out how to get the paperwork done.
I'm also curious about European countries though, because skepticalmoth does not describe export requirements for most of the countries there. Does that mean no paperwork is needed?

Might want to do some research first.
El Salvador is a CAFTA member. Also a known source for smuggled wildlife, thus targeted.
And you just announced you’re going to import via mail without USFWS involvement. You know, USFWS reads the posts, right? I

Just respect the law, ask for a permit.

I obviously am posting this in case someone can clear up the law for me. I haven't found anything about the laws, so thus far I have assumed there wasn't one. The only thing I really planned on circumventing was just people at the terminal who don't know what the laws are either, but think they do and end up throwing away everything needlessly. Do I need to apply for a USFWS permit for everything brought into the country from any country? Dead or alive? Is that all I would need?

Just respect the law, ask for a permit. My goal is to respect the law if I can figure out what it is.

Go to Forum Home. Look for the folder “legal issues”. Lots in there.
Or you can go to USFWS, or to 50 CFR whatever it is.

It is precisely those issues which direct my travels. I hit the lottery with Belize because my source there has the paperwork and a home in the USA. He brings my stuff in himself and then forwards it to me from a USA address.
