It took a long time for me to hunt down one of these based on my high standards. However, perseverance and the desire to have just ONE top-shelf example for myself has finally paid off. A stunning little gem fresh from Japan.

Sorry to disappoint you, but this is not Luehdorfia puziloi. It is L. japonica. The marginal spots on the hind wings are yellow in L. puziloi, while L. japonica has orange spots. The specimen has orange spots. The label says Hachimandaira, Iwate. L. japonica is not distributed in northern Honshu, where Iwate is located. You can find L. puziloi in this area. So the label is right for L. puziloi, but not for this specimen. It's a nice specimen, though. The photo below shows L. puziloi. Sorry it's a little out of focus.

Thank you very much benihikage92 for for that proper determination.
I really do enjoy the insight that others have in species which are either native to their region (of the world) or are things which they specialize in.
As an aesthetic collector I have long admired these items from the oriental region.
Quite lovely and distinctive...

Just a point:
When you obtain a " dream specimen " the first one shown , do you spread it yourself ? the specimens shown are nicely done. or if really expensive let the seller ?
Best

Spectacular! I didn't expect such a beauty from Japan. I'll have to pay more attention to Japanese butterflies. Is there a good website for them?

Very nice specimen. For website I would think the best bet is iNaturalist with a filter for Japan, there is 30k observations. www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=6737&taxon_id=47157&view=speciesInsects are very much loved in Japan and the Japanese are among the best authors when it comes to quality of books. My best books are in Japanese. When you compare the country to the US, it stretches from the South tip of Alaska to the Southern border of California.

Hello foxxdoc, the specimen pictured was collected and spread by a japanese collector. It is neither rare nor expensive; just a very nice "clean" example offered for sale from his collection.
Maybe he had some extra's he was willing to sell off. Perhaps, he is able to collect the species every summer and thinks nothing of selling a few and sharing the beauty of the species.
Whatever the case may be I am always a willing buyer of attractive lepidoptera where I can find them. More often than not most items which I purchase this way are fairly cheap and/or affordable. I have come to like several European sellers that sell some very clean and well prepared material from assorted countries there.
I do collect and spread (almost immediately) all of my own material. So, much of the eastern U.S. material that I show in my assorted threads is my own work.
I purchase very little "papered" material as a rule. I have had some good fortune (over the years) to "cherry-pick" some pricier or difficult to obtain things from older collections being parted out.

trehoper------------
you got a treasure ; however you were seemingly quick to accept it as a wrong ID. how do you know who is right or just an interpretation
of description ?
did you go back to the seller ?
I say this because this is not the first time a difference of opinion on correct ID s. It certainly has happened to me . who can you trust to make the final call ?
just a thought.
best
Tom

trehoper------------ you got a treasure ; however you were seemingly quick to accept it as a wrong ID. how do you know who is right or just an interpretation of description ? Luehdorfia puziloi and japonica are well known Japanese species. The first thing I did when I saw the reply by benihikage92 was check if he was correct. If he had not been I would have corrected his statement. Adam.
