Greetings, I'm having trouble ID'ing this critter, perhaps because it is too "boring"--just a small dark brown beetle (?) with no particularly noteworthy features other than its disproportionately thicc body compared to the size of its head. Photos are below, one zoomed out for scale and one zoomed in. I don't think it's a type of carpet beetle, at least not one I've seen before. I'm not certain but don't think it can fly. I've been catching them in sticky traps on the floor, haven't seen them on windowsills etc. Doesn't appear to be a tick or flea. I don't have pets and have never found any of these critters on myself, nor any bites. The dark brown/black carapace is hard, not like it's engorged with blood. They're the size of a small peppercorn. This is in Chicago, IL so northern U.S., urban environment, warm/humid early summer conditions. Thanks in advance for taking a look. Maybe a stupidly easy ID to you experts but I certainly appreciate it.

Excellent, thanks for the quick ID.
Not excellent that it's another potential pest but I'll leave the traps out to get an idea how many are roaming.

I knew it was a spider beetle right away- because I've read other id requests for the same beetle, answered by other members, before that, I'd never seen one, and you can be sure there are about ten thousand other bugs I don't know exist.

I looked through a few pages of topics on the off chance someone else posted the same thing but it's hard to tell when you don't know what the danged thing is called haha.
I wouldn't exactly say it's "fun" but it is interesting to set up traps when you move into a new place to see what's creeping around.
