Today I was trimming low branches off the weeping willow, just as I was cutting a branch, and thinking to myself, "that branch looks weird"- it was too late for what I'm sure was a Catocala briseis larva, just a little nick, and it's not something that's survivable. Not 100% sure of the species, but it was as close as I could get using my copy of Lepidoptera of the Pacific Northwest: Caterpillars and Adults, a great book actually, and a lucky find at the used book shop, published by the Forest Health Technology Team, written and photographed by Jeffery C. Miller and Paul C. Hammond, signed by Hammond...if my name was "Pam" I'd have a better story. Well, that's the breaks, that larva survived all this time, only to be taken out by me.
