On an insect trip to western Ecuador in 1988
I would encounter and capture one of natures
true magnificent oddities.
The picture before you is of Oeda hamulata Stal,(1869)
It is but, one of 3 species of treehoppers (Membracidae)
in the genus.
All three are of a golden/amber coloration. Perhaps, their
way of blending in -- in plain sight; like little sunlight
dappled splotches of sap.
They are diminutive fellows as insect go and this fellow
measures all of 16mm. Easily overlooked by most things...
But, the real magnificence of these fellows is the presence
of the structured, translucent, hollow - yet inflated looking
pronotal process.
The living creature itself is located BELOW that over-sized
heavily structured but, lightweight mass above its entire body !
Here is yet another view.
To add even more mystery to the oddity of this creature begs
the question: what is that forked process at the front of the
pronotal structure used for ?
For those few of us whom find these creatures endlessly fascinating
their still remains much (from the evolutionary standpoint); to still
be learned or pondered about unique species such as this...
