Very beautiful, but I recommend photographing it with a grey background to enhance the wing outline. A sheet of glass with opaque film placed behind the specimen is a good way to produce the effect.

Indeed, a gray background really makes these babies pop ! These are a choice piece to own if you are an aesthetic collector. However, their pricing seems to make them somewhat exclusive to own.
I am not so sure that parnassius specialists would have quite the same regard for these as they would probably rather own some paratype or hard to get subspecies.
Just yesterday, a seller from France sold a male for $385 after 6 days of bidding. It was an immaculate specimen...
I watch these all the time and I still have yet to get myself a single specimen. Lots of people seem to like them.
Females are equally as nice although, their bodies seem to get "greased-up" to varying degrees; with some being worse than others. Though this is not unusual amongst female parnassius (from what I have seen).
I would think even if you get these at insect fairs in Europe you probably still have to pay a tidy sum for ownership.
Quite the stunning item.

I would definitely fall into the rather have something rare category if I had any money.
Bear in mind that these are bred genetic aberrations of Parnassius apollo, so technically you would need a CITES permit to import them to the USA from Europe.

I'm with you, Adam. To me, collecting things like that line-bred aberration would seem a lot like collecting farm animals. They are very striking, but I prefer to collect wild butterflies and moths. Chacun a son gout!

I personally like both,I like rare and unique things, I'm not hung up on how they come into being. That is why my collection is split into compartments, self caught, British and European, historic British and exotic. Each have their own well defined places. A lot on here loathe such things but it's each to their own.
