I understand some people have good success with their moth traps (bait traps for catocala). But I haven't seen any discussion on wasps in the trap. I get numerous bald faced hornets as well as yellow jackets, and very few catocala. Currently I spray acetone from a spray bottle to kill the wasps, certainly not putting my hand in the trap with all those wasps flying around. In fact when I apply my bait to trees in the late evening just before dark, I am also dodging the bald faced hornets that have been on the bait all day. My mixture is beer/brown sugar/banana/molasses. it seems to be just what the wasps are looking for, also attracts catocala, but a big problem in the traps. And I am pretty sure the bald faced chew small holes through the screen to get out if I don't attend to the trap daily. I also believe catocala escape the trap as they are bothered by the bees and fly about to avoid them, instead of sitting quietly in the top of the trap. Any suggestions would be welcome.

After I check my trap in the morning I will take my bait and put it in a sealed bucket in my garage and then put it back into the trap at night. I do this starting in mid to late July when the bald faced hornets start showing up. This works well if your trap is in your yard or close by. I realize this may not be practical if your trap is elsewhere.
