They like humidity and warm temperatures.

They naturally feed on the invisible fungus (mould) growing on surfaces. If it's growing on wallpaper, or on a book, in a relatively damp room they eventually will eat the paper as well. The best way to keep them away is try to make the air in your room as dry as possible. These are an important pest of insect collections, and while we have methods to keep them out of the collection they are not suitable for eradicating them in a home.
