Well……I’m crazy (and a goon) for sure. Got a chance to pick up this 1980 Datsun 280zx…10th Anniversary Special Edition. It has a mere 25,600 miles odo and is one of only 500 ever made in the red/blk coloration…..mine is number 241. There were also 2500 made in a gold/blk version for that special release. I put new tires on it, removed the headlight covers, removed the tint film on back windows, and had some minor engine stuff done. It’s a joy to drive……btw……it’s Dec 19th and we’ve not yet had measurable snow….yahoo. Took it for a fun spin yesterday. I’ll really take care of this one and try to keep it in tip top shape as these cars are rare like a C. marmorata or T. xenobia caught in IL. Now I have fun stuff to do outside the insect arena.

What's a "Datsun"? I remember our Z car, a black one, it must have been pre 80's, because I was still learning to drive, and didn't get to drive the car, except once trying out the stick shift in a parking lot. Dad got one of his only speeding tickets in it- 80 in a 55. Enjoy your car. I'm so glad you removed the tinted film, I hate seeing that stuff.

Congrats Bill. I am a car enthusiast as well, particularly with regard to Nissan. They have a racing pedigree not known to many, who view their cars as cheap econoboxes. Certainly, some of their cars are cheap. They do make some very good sports cars though. My daily driver is a 2017 GT-R and my garage is my sanctuary. I really enjoy doing basic car maintenance myself. The new Z is also looking quite nice.

Bill, that's awesome. A true, lightweight sportscar, not like the pigs they became by the mid 1980s. Oddly enough, Nissan stuck with the light vehicle concept with the Pathfinder; my 1994 Pathfinder with manual hubs, five speed, and snow tires was unstoppable...except by rust. Nissans don't like rust. eurytides GT-R through winter in Kingston? Granted, you must not drive south of the river. All of our cars down here are in their auto cocoons until mid-April. Now it's just trucks and snow tires and salt spray. Here's my old girl, now all asleep for winter.

Eurytides and Chuck……..show da pics plz. A GT-R is an awesome car…..love to see it. Mine are pretty much in for the winter, but I will exercise them periodically weather permitting. Meanwhile, they are sitting w Battery Tenders and rodent protection in the outbuilding. I hear that our x-max will be in the 50s which might allow me a quick drive with each ZX.
Btw…..we, too, had a Pathfinder which was awesome in the mid to late 80s along with a 720 Pickup. A few years ago, I had a Frontier. It was a good truck, but I upgraded to a RAM 1500 in 2018 for better mileage, towing capabilities, and options.

It was true made in Japan 4x4 ( not one of these days 4 wheel drives). Next one was Xterra made in USA and after owing it for 2 years I got rid of it, broke all the time. Went back to made in Japan true 4X4 Toyota FJ Cruiser and I’m telling you it was the tank with a lots of power. Unfortunately the gas consumption was on the very high end (V6, 4L) and couldn’t keep it with price $1.80 per L for premium.

I used to have a 2003 Infiniti G35 until this past year, which was actually the body style of the Nissan Skyline for the mid-2000's. I loved that car and would have held onto it had my living situation allowed. You never see a G35 coupe without the crappy muffler, faded paint, and beat to hell by some kid. Same goes for a lot of the cars from back in the 90's that are now sought after stock (Supra, 300Z, Ingegra Type R, Civic SI, etc.) but you can normally only find abused and poorly modified.

imgur.com/a/eaJcfBmThis is a picture from a couple of years ago. I agree that a well kept classic is hard to find these days which is why I'm keeping my car stock. I do drive it year round but I take good care of it. My philosophy is that when you buy a car like that, it's meant to be driven. The entire car is wrapped in Xpel. No problems so far. I do all the maintenance myself so I know it's done right. The G35 coupe is a beautiful car, even today. I had the AWD sedan version. After that, I had a G37x coupe for about 6 years and then I traded that in for the GT-R. Always been a Nissan/Infiniti fan. However, I must say that lately, their product line has been uninspiring - I think financial woes and the loss of their former CEO who is now an international fugitive! Their daily cars aren't anything to write home about, but the sports cars still capture my attention and are good value for money. The GT-R isn't cheap, but for Ferrari level performance, it's a bargain even today. Not to mention that an oil change for anything from Ferrari, Lamborghini, or McLaren will cost you a small fortune (more than $1000). An oil change for my car done in my garage runs about $80.

Where the heck can one go with a GT-R? I'm often on logging roads and such with 4WD and plenty of ground clearance. And eurytides, you're in Canada! You can't go 20km from the border! LOL.

Euryrides, your car is stunning….. and to drive it every day must be heavenly. It looks real clean and must be a blast to drive.

Hey Chuck, you are right that I do have to be careful where I take the car. It has a ground clearance of 11 cm, so about the wingspan of P. cresphontes! So no off roading. We have an SUV for stuff like that. However, I drive the GT-R to work, get groceries, run other errands, visit family (prior to pandemic)…etc. It’s more practical than one would estimate.
Thanks Bill! I don’t take it to the track, but spirited driving is pretty fun. I work from home now so I don’t drive it as much but it used to be on the road Mon-Fri. It might seem ironic but I am actually very frugal and this is the only expensive thing I have, so I don’t want to go through 2-3 sets of tires a year by doing track days. Tires are $2000+ a set. Cars that are driven hard also need more maintenance. A transmission fluid change for this car is about $1000 for fluids alone! Brake rotors and pads done at the dealership cost about $10000. So, spirited driving is good enough for me. So far I have 9000 miles on the car and the only maintenance I have paid for is annual oil changes. Some big items are coming up though. Next year, I plan to change the coolant and service the front and rear differentials.

I did downtown Toronto to the border in barely an hour in that car, rarely dropping under 200kph. Mosport is conveniently located, but have to watch Canadians they steal tires.
