Doing your own work on modern vehicles is almost impossible- starters buried under intake manifolds, exhaust headers that require the subframe to be dropped and then the engine, etc. Even dealers can't fix them- I know of numerous BMW 7 series that suffer "limp mode" that no matter how many times they go into the shop, even the factory-certified experts can't fix. You can buy a nice mid-2000s BMW 3 series here for $2500, but that little light is on- meaning another $2500 for a catalytic converter. I don't get the new vehicle thing. Typical American suburbanites blow $600-$800/month for auto payments, and typically have two of them. That's the monthly payment on a house. And then the only other thing they own is a set of golf clubs and a big TV. Of course, that $600/$800 gets you a generic Audi, Mercedes, or whatever- not a top performance vehicle...just a pedestrian piece boredom mobile. Kudos to Eurytides for blowing big bucks- that money now will get you a Tahoe or the GT-R, I'd much rather have the GT-R! Gimme $50k and I'll buy a used 911, not a new Hyundai SUV. Bill, what are the old Datsuns going for these days? Of course, we haven't even touch the real expensive, high maintenance topic... Same here in the UK Chuck, boring Audi, Mercedes and BMW with small diesel engines most if not all on finance, they do absolutely nothing for me. I am thinking about treating myself to a weekend car but it will be something that I can maintain and keep running by my own hands rather than one that I have to take to the dealer to be "diagnosed "

The good thing about the GT-R is that, for what it is, it's actually really easy to work on. It has one engine oil drain plug. Take a Lamborghini Huracan as a comparison - it has EIGHT drains for the engine oil. There are also panels to remove which need special tools. An oil change for that car takes a long time and the dealers gladly charge you for it! Here are a couple more pictures. This was from a couple of years ago when I took the GT-R on some backroads to collect bugs. I looked back and the car looked great, so I snapped a pic. imgur.com/a/TihrX3aThis is from last night. Drove to get some takeout in below freezing conditions. imgur.com/nxY7IVo

Arrrgghh....eurytides, they MUST salt, you drive that in the snow? No way would I! Where the heck can you open it up? 401 is too congested, maybe 7?
Wish I could go to Grecos or Chezy Piggy right now...or better Waupoos.

Chuck,
It depends on mileage, condition, if it’s a fixer upper, and particular models/years. Generally speaking they run from 12k to 40k. That does not include shipping, paying for repairs, or fees associated with a purchase.

Wish I could go to Grecos or Chezy Piggy right now...or better Waupoos. They do salt, and there are definitely rusted bolts on the bottom, but I replace them when necessary. I also take them out and put anti-seize before installing. Car was meant to be driven. Plus, prior to working from home, this was my daily car and I needed to be able to drive to work without having to buy another vehicle. I would put on as many km in the winter as I did in the summer. I would drive in slush and I would drive in fresh snow. It's not too congested here, and it's more about the acceleration than the speed. If you go over 150km/h here and the police catch you, your car is impounded for a week. So I basically never go faster than that anyway. However, the 0 to 150km part is still fun. You have good taste. Prior to the pandemic, I enjoyed going to all those places you mentioned!

So……what does one do when it’s 16 degrees outside, snow and salt on the roads??? One endeavors to create model replicas of cars one owns for fun. While they’re not perfect, they portray miniatures of the actual cars. Since there is no model kit for either one specifically, I had to modify 1981zx turbo model kits to match my ‘80 and ‘83 cars. Had to do this since all my papered material has been mounted up and put into the collection.

Nice Bill! I did that as well, to include opening doors, seatbelts, plug wires, etc. but after so many nice cars I had too many models taking space so sold them.
My frozen time when we’re not outdoors anyway has been spent collating and purging.
Let’s see more photos.

Wait, Bill is out of papered specimens? Need to start collecting micros. You’ve got a long winter ahead.

I made antennae by heating plastic from the kit and drawing out a length of molten plastic, then cut to size. I still have the chrome foil I used to make bumpers and other chrome bits. It's horrible here now, going to single digits F, high winds. The plus is that the small lakes will freeze over so we can go sailing. And, if we want to we can cross the border into Canada over the ice. Chuck
