Hello, Recently I have took photos of some of Alexanors from my collection. Thought it might be a good idea to post it here, too (to tease somebody, e.g. panzerman ;D ) So, here we are. Papilio alexanor destelensis: male. France: Var. P. alexanor hazarajatica: male. Turkmenistan: SW. Kopet-Dagh Mts. P. alexanor hazarajatica: female. Turkmenistan: SW. Kopet-Dagh Mts. P. alexanor voldemar: male. Uzbekistan: W. Tian-Shan Mts. P. alexanor voldemar: female. Uzbekistan: W. Tian-Shan Mts. Except for destelensis, all are collected by myself many years ago, in 1991.

Thanks for the compliments! It might be a good idea to put here a photos of all the described sspp. of Alexanor. There is a thread on this topic at the old forum, of course. Though it would be handy to have everything gathered at one place, IMHO Alexei

Nice collection Rune, and very well mounted! Does anyone have pictures from specimens from Croatia and/or southern Italy?

Does anyone have pictures from specimens from southern Italy? Papilio alexanor ssp. from Southern Italy is a great rarity and a mistery. In fact, this subspecies is known on the basis of few specimens collected during a period of about seventy years. The first who collected an alexanor in Sicily was Henriksen. He caught a male in 1980 near Linguaglossa, and in the same occasion he saw another male. No other specimens are known from S.Luca d'Aspromonte. In june 1985, near Morano (Cosenza Prov.), Mr G. Gulli collected a female while it was laying eggs on a small yellow-flowered Umbrellifera. Gulli also bred a series of specimens from the wild collected eggs. I have found this informations in "Synopsis of Papilio alexanor". The authors of this work, Bollino & Sala, think that specimens of Papilio alexanor surely arrived to the present localities from just along the mountain ranges of Basilicata and Calabria. They also say that "for unknown reasons the southern Italian populations are exceedingly rare, and their poorly known distribution is to be linked to their scarcity. Their direct derivation from Greek and Albanian populations is evident from the analysis of the few available specimens, although some morphological features suggest a local subspecific differentiation".
