Back too Napoleon. In 1796-1815 era, there were no true "democracies" when compared too 2011. Even, Athens, which is seen as the first true democracy, it really was not. Look what happened too Socrates, Pericles....
Napoleon was a product of his time. In 1792, France was in turmoil, run by evil men like Robespierre, Marat, Danton etc. Like Pol Pot, these idiots killed off all the nobility, scientists, clergy. Bonaparte saved the day at Toulon, then took France out of the chaos, too by 1804 a powerfull state. Many died in the Napoleonic Wars, but, France was invaded in 1792, by 1798 the tables were turned, when France was on the ascendency. One really stupid thing Napoleon did was the so called, "Louisiana purchase" of 1803. When he sold one third of modern day USA, then French North America too Thomas Jefferson for peanuts.

Yep, we should ask for a better price now...
But John, if France did not help USA twice (with La Fayette and then with Louisiana sale), powerful USA may have never happened and nobody would have saved France from German panzers in 1918 and 1944.

Yes, had Louis XVI not sent the French naval forces, and the Marquis de Lafayette, Lord Cornwallis would have certainley defeated the Revolutionary forces, and retained British control over the colonials. Also, Jean Lafitte helped Andrew Jackson in 1814 defeat the British at the Battle of New Orleans. Actually, in WW1, the allies shocked the Germans with their new weapon the tank, the German side almost won that War, with their better trained smaller army, and their U-Boot arm, however sheer weight of numbers eventually went against them, much like France and Napoleon, who had the better cavalary, infantry, marshalls, supreme commander, but were outgunned, numbered vs the combined forces of Austro-Hungary Empire, Czarist Russia, Prussia, Great Britain, Sweden....

I am afraid the Mediterrannee will soon be the new iron curtain...

What else could you expect from a forcefully implemented "democracy"? One should consider possible ramifications before supporting bandits.

lamprima2 < well between a forcefully implemented democracy and a forcefully implemented dictatorship, there's no good choice. There wouldn't be so much arms and milicias in Lybia if Gaddafi had accepted to leave or to organize democratic elections. Civil war is always the worst solution, but like in Syria, the dictator just had to organize free elections.
