Hello Collectors. In April of this year I sent Carlos Saavreda in Peru US $512 in advance for insect specimens. I did this after checking his references. Since that time I have heard numerous excuses about delays in obtaining permits to ship. Recently he has come up with an elaborate story about shipping my specimens to a customer in Connecticut who in turn was going to rebox the bugs and ship them on to me. He supplied me with a false tracking number of a box leaving Connecticut saying it was on it's way to me but it is actually headed out of the country!
BEWARE OF CARLOS SAAVREDA!!! HE HAS JOINED THE RANKS OF THIEVES AND SCAMMERS!! DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH HIM!!!

I have mentioned multiple times that Peru is the new Cameroon. Referneces are meaningless for the most part there. What follows is the most ignored advice on planet Earth.......Do not send money in advance..........

Carlos - The bottom line is this.....You have my money and I have nothing. The tracking number means nothing. The parcel allegedly left Connecticut last Thursday. USPS service does not take a week for delivery to a US destination!

Hi damoose. You should call the USPS and check what happened to your parcel.
Carlos is a very honest and reliable guy. I highly doubt that he scammed you.

UPDATE: Since my post I have received information from two other collectors who have been ripped off by Carlos. One of them to the tune of $1200. Carlos claims to have shipped a parcel to me but the tracking number is bogus. We are currently working with officials in Peru who have successfully prosecuted internet fraud. Make no mistake about it, Carlos Saavreda is a thief. Carlos when you read this post it is time for you to get busy and send me a refund via Western Union!

Second Update: After what seems like forever, I received a box from Carlos which was sent to another US supplier then forwarded on to me. I will not have time to go through the box closely until tomorrow but everything appears to be there. The E. gigantea that I ordered were all loose in the bottom of the box so I hope they are not damaged. This transaction has been one of the most confusing and stressful transactions that I have ever done. My hope was to find a legitimate, reliable supplier from Peru whom I could order from on a regular basis. The prices I got from Carlos were good for the specimens that I ordered. I will leave it up to you collectors on how to proceed with Carlos. Thanks for the comments and emails of support. Mike

I have had two successful transactions with Carlos in February. So for the thrid transaction, I increased the amount to $1200 USD and paid in advance. I have told Carlos to send with TRACKING number. He said he would. But then he told me he wanted to save money so he sent the parcel without tracking number.
It's been 50 days and I have not received my parcel. Both Carlos and I believe the parcel is lost.
Carlos says he will compensate me. We are trying to work out the details now.

A TRACKING NUMBER DOES NOT COST YOU A DIME, IT'S FREE WORLDOVER... AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO ASK FOR IT - IT'S DONE AUTOMATICALLY, ONCE YOU SEND YOUR PARCEL.

A TRACKING NUMBER DOES NOT COST YOU A DIME, IT'S FREE WORLDOVER... AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO ASK FOR IT - IT'S DONE AUTOMATICALLY, ONCE YOU SEND YOUR PARCEL. Sorry, but I have to question that. A tracking number is only given for registered post, which costs more than normal post. You can't get a tracking number if you stick stamps on a box and bung it into a letter box, for instance (not that many people do that with parcels), but even if you send the parcel at a post office the clerk will only give you a tracking number if it is registered. Adam.

Hey Guys, it does not matter. Unless you are dealing with a reliable worldwide known established dealer never send the money up front. They are exploiting that well know circus phrase "there is a sucker born every minute". There are really very few established well known suppliers from the countries of origin. There is no free lunch, which some people think they deserve. The excuses boggle the mind. Its really very simple. You order...they send...you inspect....you send the payment. So unless you are dealing with a dealer that has a long established honest reputation around the world you are going to get ripped off all the time, and you really are encouraging that behaviour by going along with it. Adam is right: tracking numbers only come with a certain levels of postal service, which you pay for.

Saving on shipping cost when sending $1,200 worth of material is grossly irresponsible.

Oh, God! How could I forget! Of course, there are yet other options of sending a $1,200 worth parcel: forget the stamps, to hell with receiver's address, you just write his nickname on the goddamn parcel and stick it into the letter box, especially when you send it from, say, Buryatia to Mozambique... That does save a lot of money and effort... Seriously, I just thought IT SIMPLY SHOULD BE ALWAYS REGISTERED ON DEFAULT. Adam, tis, nosorog, you all are right. (And, hopefully, all right).

I believe that Carlos is an honest supplier. I do think he is trying to cut too many corners to save a little money. He sent my bugs to another buyer here in the US with the request that my bugs be reboxed and then forwarded on to me. He tried to consolidate by shipping only one box and there were also issues with Peru permits. When I buy from overseas I expect the shipment be sent with a reliable carrier which includes a valid tracking number!!! All of your comments are right on! It is getting tougher and tougher to find reliable, legitimate suppliers. Jonathan, $1,200 is way too much money to lose! I hope that Carlos will correct this situation. Please keep us posted.
