I suppose P avelleneda is THE holy grail for pierid collectors Dunc..I got a couple from Robert Gooden at W.W.B. about 20 years ago-they were already 20 years old then & were not cheap...attaching a photo P.avellaneda might indeed be one of the most sought after Pierids. They are available on the market, but not really a bargain (especially high quality females).

As a Pieridae collector, I know better "holy grails" ... that has never been sold ... with unknown female ... some not caught for more than 50 years. P. avellaneda is indeed a stunning species but not so hard to find for those who have money.

Colias ponteni, Delias cumanau female, Delias takashii, Delias fioretti and many other Delias known from less than 4 or 5 specimens.
Must be other rarities from other less known genera too.

You could include Colias dubia, Colias leechi and Colias felderi on that list too.

The second nicest Hemoboia is Hebomoia glaucippe reopstorffi from Adamans Islands
I don't have one of those and it's even more expensive than P. avellaneda

I think one of the best things about the forum is that we discuss families other than birdwings and swallowtails, there really is an appreciation for all insects on here, my holy grail, mainly because apart from this year I have never seen it for sale was cirrochroa imperatrix, there are others too like cethosia vasalia of which I am lucky enough to have a pair, I am fortunate that I have (as yet) not got into collecting delias as I fear I would now be bankrupt.

Thanks for the information! Always interesting to read about rare and often less known species.
Regarding the Phoebis avellaneda I have to add, that there is a holy grail of that species which deserves that title. It is the form "salvatori" originally described in 1973 as a new subspecies to P.avellaneda by Ramon Calzadilla Nunez. Today it is considered to be just a form and not a subspecies. Specimens of this form can be viewed in the Instituto de Zoologia de la Academia de Ciencias de Cuba in Havana. But as I have never been there I have not seen a specimen of this form yet and in the internet there is also not a single picture available (as far as I know). Maybe a fellow enthusiast in this forum has more information?

Must be other rarities from other less known genera too. Catasticta lycurgus and Catasticta rosea, within others. Catasticta lycurgus is known only for the type, collected on Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (NE Colombia); Catasticta rosea is known for the type, plus 5 specimens collected in recent years. I am proud to have 3 males of C. rosea in my own collection.

Thanks Maurizio. I am still waiting for you to write a Monography or to create a website about Catasticta.
A fantastic genus with still a lot of important discoveries to be made as Delias.
