Hi. I was a member before the change to Proboards and just today got re-registered. I was wondering what the Karma ratings are about. I have seen where some members have numbers, while most have none. Is this something one just makes up or something else? I can't recall the member who uses the quote "my Karma ran over your Dogma" but I like that one! Anyhow, I'm glad to be back! Darrell (Arrowhead)

You have two options with the karma, you can exhalt or smite a user. When you exhalt them they get +1 on their karma value, when you smite they get -1 on their karma. You can do that a few times a day after waiting a certain period ( I have not found out how long, 1h, 3h , I don't know exactly ). This should then be representative of how the community likes your posts or dislikes them. Another fun fact is that most active users on here have, or had for a majority of the time, a negative karma. Seems we got a lot of people misusing the feature to bring their bad mood into the forum. I for my part choose once a day the best post I saw and exhalt that person. Some posts I favorised: First post by homard: insectnet.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=favorites&action=display&thread=668Awesome beetles: insectnet.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=favorites&action=display&thread=680...and a few others.

Thanks very much for the explanation. I had also wondered about the smite and exalt part. Best wishes, Darrell (Arrowhead)

Don't take karma too seriously. It seems to a one of the 'fun' features we get on this board.

It seems I have a lot of friends here ...

Me too .Quite many people(or 1-2 who smite me many times..) it seems to be symplegmatic here about me or my specimens, but in my life I use to write bulls like the karma one on my old shoes (not to say somewhere else.. ). I have much more important things to do. AND I say 'I use to write bulls like the karma one on my old shoes ',cause here it is obvious that there are some 'teams of friends' who exalt each other and improve their karma all the time, and this way of course the 'high' karma of some members here is not representative of the quality of their posts and their 'entomological knowledge',but is a result of their friendship.I have spotted personally at least one such team here, mainly of boyz of around 20 years of age (but also of older ages)..I can see that really very knowledgeable persons here, have a lower karma than these 'teams of friends',so I find it of no worth at all to take the karma here seriously or as an indication that a member has won recognision of the entomological community. Personally,I started in this new forum with posting some of my rare specimens and I had already got a karma of -5,so I can't see a reason for this other than the complexes of some people here. It's a pitty. Thanos PS: As it seems that the system doesn't allow some words,by 'bulls' I was meaning the dung of the bull .

Hi. I admit you got me. What does symplegmatic mean? I couldn't find that one in my Webster's, LOL. Thanks, Darrell

One more question. Yesterday I had a 1 for Karma. Today it is gone. Is there a way to tell who "smites" you and why?

Means the one who has complexes. Symplegma in Greek means complex.

strange that a big smitting campaign started against some of the members that didn't agree with another member. It seemed that this member didn't appreciate that his comments were not appreciated and that he didn't succeed in repress his natural compulsive and negative smitting behaviour !

I thought that it was odd that some of the long time knowledgeable members had low or zero karma ratings, I see even Clark has only 17, I believe at last count. I recall some ridiculous postings in the past, but they seemed to be political or religious in topic and that appears to have stopped. I know it's hard not to vent on world doings in the correct forum. Who could be satisfied with what's going on with this planet? Sincerely, Darrell

africaone, let us know HOW you are able to know that a SINGLE member (and also THE NAME of this member,as you said: 'HE',and 'SOME OF THE MEMBERS who DIDN'T AGREE with ANOTHER MEMBER')has started a negative smitting campagne against some other members(as you said),and also THE NAMES OF THESE MEMBERS. This way will help me(and other members)to learn which are the members who have smited me(or some other members) so badly. I thought that it is not possible to spot the name of the member that smites or exalts you each time, and it is obvious that everyone here who has been smited, this is cause someone else(or some others) doesn't /don't appreciate his/her posts. But,as you found out the way how to be sure/have proofs about certain members' names, let us know and help us please. (Not that I care about 'karma' at all ;P,but just I'm curious about this 'ability' of you). And..africaone..I checked that,a few minutes ago, when my karma had turned from -7 to -8,exactly that time, online was only the arrowhead and you(and me -I was as invisible-),and...,again exactly that time, you posted your last post on this thread, although -after this post of you- you were/are not appearing in the lists '(recent) users online' (I mean the lists 'users online' and 'active users during the past 24 hours') ..which means that you turned on the choice 'stay invisible' of your profil(as you were visible in these lists until a few minutes ago). A few minutes later, and while the arrowhead was the only member appearing in the 'users online' list, my karma turned again from -8 to -7. So,I think/can suppose that you were the one who smited me,and the arrowhead the one who exalted me.. .But again I'm not sure or have proofs for it,so just let us know please your method of spotting and being sure for . Btw,this topic has nothing to do with insects and my love for them, and I really hate to post in this certain section,so this is maybe my last post on this thread. Thanos

Thanos Where is you "members online" list ? As you said, if the smiter is invisible, it is impossible to detect him. Even not, it is is extremely difficult. Now you gave the solution to the "serial smiter" how to not be detected. may be he yet used this technic, at least occasionally to cover his tacks ! In this case (what I think), this proove his behaviour being pathologic (compulsive ?) as he thought hardly how to do to not be detected. I think this based on what happened this last weeks. There are of course other ways more complicate (as multi "serial smiter", etc..). That makes "karma" less "fun" ! tatatattaaaaaaaaaaa ..... "insectnet expert" !!! more seriously : exalt / smite must be used with some fair ! Only once if you greatly approve or greatly disapprove the post, I think (may be I am wrong ?). More in the spirit of the forum (unlike Claude, i don't think it must be used only with the exalt button !).
