White men of Europe "Discovered" North America in the 1400's. I have read that North America was covered in Forest from the Atlantic Coast to the Great Plains. It was said that a Squirrel could travel through the trees from The Atlantic Shore of Massachusetts to the Mississippi River and never set foot on the ground. It was humans from Europe who removed the forest, altered the land scape, dammed the rivers and built the Urban Centers. And as the world population of man continues to grow uncontrolled, Mother Earth will fix that problem as well.
You can talk all you want about global warming, acid rain and world hunger, but in the end when the bones of mankind are fossilized, the earth will continue to turn, and who knows what is next??
The high temperature in Aurora, Ohio on 26 December 2019 was 63°F. I am sure I will find some Lithophane moths, possibly a Eupsilia or Metaxaglae moth or two in my Bait traps this AM.
We can all go out and shout at the rain, However, Mother Earth is not listen to us.
I believe differently than most of you. I believe there is a God. No matter what you say to me, I believe there is a God. I have been extremely fortunate in my life. There has been more good than bad. I met and married the most beautiful and compassionate woman, the love of my life. I was extremely fortunate to have had her for 53 years. And I still believe the reason that most of you do not post your picture on Insectnet is that you are just plain Butt Ugly.
It is almost 8AM. And most importantly, I woke up, again.
And I got geart Christmass present this year. A $100 Waffle House gift card. And in my stocking which I hung on my Fire Place with great care, was a bottle of GasEx.
More later, I am off to the Waffle house.

Leroy, Your hypothesis about photos works for me. I have always avoided having my picture taken, not because of my high level of security clearance, my criminal background, or because each photo steals a little piece of my soul (as some native americans believe.) It is simply that I’m not really all that good-looking like some of you and I don’t want to offend anyone. Rick

I guess it depends on your self esteem ... I'm not exactly pig ugly, but I am definitely not handsome either, still my photo is my avatar although I admit it was taken 10 years ago.

Exoticimports, I worked for a government defense lab most of my career, so I know lots about government waste and fraud. We had an intense level of auditting to be sure there was no waste or fraud. Our travel expenses were closely audited. One analysis showed that for the whole lab the cost of this auditting almost equalled the gigantic cost of the travel itself. Of couse the workers knew what minor tricks they could play to pad the voucher while passing the audit, fraud was never eliminated.
This is abig country, with a giant budget and multiple levels of government. Pretty easy to point to giant fraud examples that are revealed, and imagine how much remains hidden. Studies ranking countries for corruption don’t make the US worst, we are way better than average. Life is pretty good here. We have an enormous effort going to watch for fraud, and our free press plays a very big role. I wouldn’t trade our system of government for any other I’ve seen.
My disagreement with “Follow the Money” is just that it so often gets the wrong answer. Everyone is not motivated by money and greed. There is also honor, religious beliefs, even mental instability that causes people to do lots of stuff not in their own financial interest. You get billionaires like Warren Buffet or Bill Gates giving away lots of money and even calling for increased taxing of the wealthy.
The fossil fuels giants, exxon, BP etc could have plowed their money into getting the “Truth” about climate change . They did some of this and didn’t like the answer so they plowed their money into a campaign to confuse the public and delay the inevitable when fossil fuel extraction becomes less profitable. You fell for it. The shareholders benefited at least in the short term. Rick

Donald Trump, our current President. Why do the Democraps hate him so?
Why? I can explain it in two words. And you cannot have one without the other.
Melania and Money.
There was an saying more than a half century ago when I was in High school. Her name was Joyce Millard. (Not her real name but close) She was a stunning beauty. It was said by many, and I quote:
"I would crawl on my hands and knees thru rocks, broken glass, and boards with rusty nails just to smell the exhaust fumes from the laundry truck that carried her panties away."
Now that is true love.....

The whole business of Greta Thunberg has been very entertaining. The old white males in our country had a fit when a 16 year old girl with asperger’s got so much publicity telling the truth about Global Warming. As much as they tried to put her down, it just reflects on themselves. The fact that a young lady with a mild mental condition has understood the science that all these wise old guys can’t yet understand is really a big embarrassment for the lot of them including our President Trump. Of course Trump is smart enough to understand the science, but he is so caught up in the politics of his cult following, he just says stuff that makes them cheer. Who knows whether Trump really understands the science or not.
The amazing thing is little Greta may have had more political impact than Exxon’s 100 million dollars. We should follow the money and find out who paid Greta to speak out. But no, probably no one paid her. Why didn’t Exxon pay her to shut up? Because money isn’t everything.

I think you nailed the issue. A young girl has accomplished more in her short life than the vast majority of middle aged men can even dream of achieving. Hence - the ones that are threatened by her resort to name calling and making fun of her. I will speculate that it's apparently the only way to make them feel ok with their diminished status? john

I am curious: what Greta Thunberg has accomplished? She has, it appears, to have been made the poster child of turning a legitimate science field (Climate study) and indicator of concern (climate change) into a cult. Why did I write that? Here is a partial list of behaviors leading me to that conclusion. 1. End of the world 'prophecies.' 2. Telling everyone else what to do but not doing it themselves. 3. Shouting down dissent and/or deflecting via obfuscation. 4. Changing definitions. 5. Repeating a symbolic phrase ad infinitum. (Change is coming, Bless your little heart, Allahu Ackbar) 6. Encourage abandonment of education. 7. Refusal to discuss any question about perceived hypocrisy. 8. Firm belief that no statement can be correct unless it is congruent to cult leadership. These apply to many in the environmental movement as well as 'fill in the blank with a skin color' supremacists, and even religions. You can have many silly discussions about many silly things and then sleep a contented keyboard warriors sleep. I have not lately been trying to reason with the Climate Cultist Deniers. Instead - I will continue to do as I have written and not be discouraged by the inaction of Greta - (Can anyone show a photo of her picking up trash? I do not deny a photo exists but I did not see one in a preliminary search) or worse- seeing the math of how much carbon she and her team burned - It undid the last few years of my families efforts -----or tragically - encouraging children to skip school. My two best friends in school were black and Vietnamese. One day all of the black students stayed home from school in protest that there was not a Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday....I mean all but one. My friend Adrian was at his desk that morning. When I asked why he was at school when all other black children skipped school in protest he said something that stuck with me. He said "Martin King would be crying today. He wanted black children to have an education. That is how to make a difference. This is how I choose to honor him. By learning..." Not trying to 'touch a nerve' but I will swing the pendulum now and smack a popular Christian belief so yall know I'm not partial. Christians have many beliefs that their own book does not support. The age of the planet is not even hinted in the Bible in English translations or even in the original languages it was written in..........Drinking - Fine, Pre marital sex - also not forbidden and on go the Euro Christian traditions. Change will happen soon (my prediction). If humans naturally treat each other as has been done for so long then the change will be one of death. Enough of this - Get up and take care of what you are and have been doing. Quit waiting for another generation to do it for you. Hmmmmm....... Now what mantra should a 50 year old retired wildlife officer/rehabber, college instructor, and current restorer of native lands have? Doesn't matter, I think I just alienated everyone! Cheers Ty

I am curious: what Greta Thunberg has accomplished? Well, for one thing, she has you asking about her by name. Seven pages and counting of discussion on a forum devoted supposedly to insects. Rightly asking those in power how they can morally choose to harm the world that she and other are forced to inherit in meetings and forums across the globe. She's not the first young person to raise the issues (see Dexter Holland quote below - not that he was the first either, I just like the song), she will not be the last. But she is the one that has people talking at the moment - and that is half the battle. Even if all they can muster up is ridicule and call her rude names.... Certainly more than I've accomplished. John Not the One - I've always assumed written by Dexter Holland, PhD ( because Noodles doesn't seem up to this task... but that's me being judgmental - no?) I'm not the one who made the world what it is today I'm not the one who caused the problems started long ago But now I deal with all the consequences that troubles our times I carry on and never once have even questioned why I'm innocent But the weight of the world is on my shoulders I'm innocent But the battles started are far from over .... Still we grow and then the problems they become our own We carry on without even realizing why We're innocent But the weight of the world is on our shoulders We're innocent But the battles left us are far from over We're not the ones whose pollution blackened our skies And ruined our streams We're not the ones who made the nuclear bombs That threaten our lives We're not the ones who let the children starve in faraway lands We're not the ones who made the streets unsafe to walk at night And even if we try and not become so overwhelmed And if we make some contribution to the plight we see Still our descendants will inherit our mistakes of today They'll suffer just the same as we and never wonder why

Leroy, I think the idea of you re populating is a reasonable thought, my wife and I (yes, I said wife) have always viewed the principle that 1 male to every 1,000 females is all that's essential. Whether the climate gets us or not , the world is fast becoming overpopulated and let's face it, this means eliminating this problem one way or another be it by human or natural forces. We are actually headed for a crash.
