"It came from Ranongga, flew out of Munda or Gizo (probably Gizo), and was wholesaled out of Honiara. Next? I can start asking local questions to find out the source of that specimen and where it was fabricated. I am fairly certain it was fraudulently modified in Honiara or Russia. If it was Honiara, it would be the first I knew of, and will quite likely be able to find out who did it."
Also if it was "fraudulently modified in Honiara" it would have to have been spread there (in the correct manner - do they know how?), exposed to UV and shipped to Russia already spread. This seems highly unlikely to me.
Since Dmitriy hasn't told us who he obtained the specimen from we really don't know if he is telling the truth or not.

I have NEVER seen a set specimen in Solomon Islands. There were some in the bio building before the war, so perhaps somebody at one time knew how to set them, but not now. There aren't even any butterflies in the gift shops. But the locals aren't stupid, they could figure out how to set specimens and use UV to turn blue; however, they don't seem particularly motivated to do any such work, criminal or otherwise. So all in all, it is highly unlikely that the fraud was effected in Solomon Islands.

But why just Solomons or Russia? There are many places in the world where "smart guys" do know how to fabricate a "niclasi", how to change the geodata and make an "archeri" out of regis or an "isabellae" out of the nominate victoriae and so on... Why not Greece or Slovakia, for instance?

Indeed, but the longer that Dmitriy refuses to tell us who he obtained the already modified specimen from the longer we will suspect that he may possibly have done it himself.
Surely if he didn't modify the specimen himself he would be happy to tell us where he got it from?

Adam, please take a good look at the photo of the guy with the car and the watch. How do you assess the probability of this particular person doing rather a sophisticated operation, i.e. making a "niclasi"? I say: zero. And there can simply be quite a different and very primitive reason why he does not tell us whom he got it from...

I can't see any details of the watch, other than it is big and seems to be brash, but the car number plate does appear rather more than normal. Here in Thailand a number like that (9 is the most auspicious number here, so 999 is extra special) would cost a small fortune.
Mind you, the not very nerdy looking kid could be posing with someone else's car for all we know.

And how about someone else's house and another someone else's watch? Could be? The extra big watch, the over special car number, and all the excessive rest are nothing but pure kitsch, no matter who the actual owner is. Zero the hero...

If Dmitriy was defrauded by somebody else, he should do the same as others have done- warn everyone. That supplier is no longer reliable. That may take some heat- but not financial responsibility, off him.

Man there is some real drama here...better than TV. I just checked in to see any more posts but Dmitiry seems silent lately. Is that really him in front of that car???!!! Yes, he did offer me $200 partial refund and then $600....but I just wanted the butterfly I saw on his auction [before I found out it was faked, and before I relaxed it]. When you invest that kind of money you expect what was advertised! Don't know what I was thinking....
Still have not heard anything from Ebay [not looking good]

NO, what was the dealers name that YOU Dmitriy originally purchased the ornithoptera from? I'm sure the butterfly men on here may know the name if you tell us. This way maybe you can clear your name from the changing of colour from the butterfly? I Do not know the name of the final dealer. I have bought it through a friend. Dmitriy

Geez. How many times. There is no such thing like real niclasi. All of them are 'faded' to blue. So you bought a true niclasi.
And if you wanna I can tell you how to prepare your own blue form.

Please share with us. I have one bad shape rubianus and one regis that might help me look at them with a bigger smile.
